Animals Information

ANIMALS ARE LIVING THINGS

Animals are born, grow, reproduce and die.

Animals need food, water and oxygen to stay alive.

We can classify animals into two big groups:

-Vertebrate animals: they have a skeleton or backbone inside.

-Invertebrate animals: they don't have a skeleton or backbone inside.

VERTEBRATE ANIMALS

        They have a skeleton inside.
They are divided into 5 groups: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.

1. Mammals

* Mammals are viviparous.
* They give birth and they have live babies.
* Mammals drink their mother ́s milk.
* Mammals have hair or fur.
* Most mammals have four legs.
* Mammals breathe with their lungs.

   2. Birds

*Birds are oviparous. They lay eggs.
*Birds have two legs, two wings and a beak.
*Birds have feathers. Most birds can fly.
*Birds breath with lungs.

3. Reptiles

*Reptiles are oviparous. They lay eggs.
*Some reptiles have legs and some have no legs.
*Reptiles have scales or a shell.
*Reptiles are cold-blooded.
*Reptiles breathe their lungs.

4. Amphibians

*Amphibians are oviparous and lay eggs in the water!
*Amphibians have wet or moist skin.
*Baby amphibians live in the water. Adults live on land.

          5. Fish

         *Fish are oviparous.

         *They lay eggs.

         *Fish live in the water.

         *Fish have scales and fins.

         *Fish breathe with their gills.

INVERTEBRATE ANIMALS

They don't have a skeleton inside.

Some of them have soft bodies; others have a shell or exoskeleton to protect their bodies.

All invertebrates are oviparous: they lay eggs.

We can classify invertebrates into: arthropods and molluscs.

Arthropods

*Most live on land.

*They have many legs.

*They have a hard body or exoskeleton.

Molluscs

*Most live in water

*They have soft bodies, but some have shells or tentacles.
